Seasons of Kashmir

Winter in Kashmir

By December the winter season starts to fall and covers the valley to hibernate. But at the same time skiing at Gulmarg and the Himalayan Chakore & Wild duck shooting season starts which tourists have been enjoying since the British Raj. Also if by any chance the Dal-lake freezes then one can enjoy the ice skating too. From 1987 Heli-skiing has also started in certain new areas.

Winter in Jammu and Kashmir starts in the month of December and it is extremely cold then. Even though the trees have a bare look and the beauty of the hued gardens no longer catches the eye, there is an altogether different charm in the surroundings. The snow covered landscape is a visual treat as well.

Through December, to the beginning of March is winter time, which presents Srinagar in yet another mood. Bare, snow-covered landscapes being watched from beside the warmth of a fire is a joy that cannot be described to anyone who has not experienced it.

Some houseboats and hotels remain open in winter-these are either centrally heated or heated with 'Bukharis', a typically Kashmiri stove kept alight with embers of wood, quite effective in the winter.

Spring in Kashmir

A place famous for lakes and mountains set like a jeweled crown on the map. Kashmir is a many-faceted diamond changing its character with the four seasons, always extravagantly beautiful.

It comes alive in spring when nature bedecks the valley with blossom after blossom: almond, cherry, apple, peach, pears, pansies, narcissi, daises and many more. Throughout the valley thousands of fruits and flowers burst into bloom exuding and alluring fragrance.

Spring, which extends roughly from March to early May, is when a million blossoms carpet the ground. The weather during this time can be gloriously pleasant at 23oC or chilly and windy at 6oC. This is the season when Srinagar experiences rains, but the showers are brief.

Spring blossoms suddenly appear on seemingly dead branches, heralds of the coming spring. They represent the gentle, almost unnoticed flowering of enlightenment, the surprisingly quiet recognition of the mind. These spring blossoms appear only after the hard, lonely winter of meditation and spiritual practice, yet when they peek forth, their appearance is natural, effortless. Spring blossoms are the new life that emerges from the dead branches of the little self, they simply emerge when the limited ego has passed through its seasons and withered away.

Spring season sets in March and continues till early May. The weather then is very pleasant and it would be no exaggeration to compare it with that of Switzerland. Kashmir raps itself in an emerald green jacket with flowery designs all over. The sight has a rich yet ethereal touch. Daisies cover the parks and gardens. The Climate of Jammu and Kashmir at this time of the year is ideally suited to thoroughly enjoy the beauty of the place.

Summer in Kashmir

Spring is followed by summer. Temperatures rise slightly. But the heat never reaches unendurable limits. In comparison to other parts of the country particularly the plain regions, the Climate of Jammu and Kashmir is unbelievably lovely at this time of the year as well. The rippling rivulets, the serene lakes, the Chinar groves, the pine forests all appear very enticing in the summers. Fruits are ripe and in plenty.

In the summer the melting snow of the mountains fill the brooks and rivers with gushing water. Only a touch of white peaks on the top most crags tells the tale of winter past. Characteristic of summer are the floating gardens on the Dal lake, trout fishing, trekking in the Himalayas, golf, water sports and bird watching etc.

Summer extends from May until the end of August. Light woolens may be required to wear out of Srinagar. In higher altitudes night temperatures drop slightly. Srinagar at this time experiences day temperatures of between 25oC and 35o C. At this time, the whole valley is a mosaic of varying shades of green - rice fields, meadows, trees, etc. and Srinagar with its lakes and waterways is a heaven after the scorching heat of the Indian plains.

Autumn in Kashmir

The onset of autumn, perhaps Kashmir's loveliest season, is towards September, when green turns to gold and then to russet and red. The highest day temperatures in September are around 23°C and night temperatures dip to 10 ° C by October and further drop by November, when heavy woolens are essential.

Summer gives way to autumn. Nature packs up for the season with wild abandon leaving a trail of gold mellowed leaves. Red fire like glowing Chinar leaves start falling. One of the famous highlights of autumn is the saffron fields of Pampore, for which Kashmir is very famous.

After summer, the most awaited season in Jammu and Kashmir sets in the month of September. It is autumn, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. Everything turns to gold. The sight of the landscape has a magnetic appeal then. The red carpeted gardens are a treat to the eyes. Temperatures rise to a maximum of 23 degrees in the morning but the nights are relatively colder. The weather is very conducive for the tourists to take delight in the sights, sounds and smell of this idyllic land. The vibrant valleys, the rustle of the fallen leaves, the fragrance of flowers are there to enchant you.
